The Essentials Weekend
Wilderness Survival & Bushcraft

On the Essentials Weekend you will learn and experience practical hands on training on how to utilise the natural environment and resources for shelter, fire, water and food, making cordage for snares and fish lines from plants, making fishing hooks from wild shrubs, learning about animal tracks and signs, making fire with fungi, spending the night sleeping in the forest in a shelter that you have constructed using only what nature has provided and learning how to plan and prepare for a future safe outdoor adventure of your own including how to navigate by map, compass and nature's signs under the guidance of our qualified and experienced outdoor leaders.

The Essentials Weekend can be undertaken in either the Brecon Beacons or Herefordshire, both locations are abound with numerous native species of flora and fauna that thrives within it's natural habitat. The essentials weekend is open to all, whether you wish to participate on your own or with friends, below you will find up to date information about the course itinerary and scheduled course dates together with the relevant links to what kit you require and how to book your place, we look forward to meeting you.
Itinerary

Shelter

• Construction and use of natural shelters in the forest


Fire
• Natural resources for fire Fire by fungi • Fire steels and kits • Fire starting and fire management • Fire safety

Water
• Collection and disinfection - making water safe to drink • Common diseases and disorders and prevention

 

Food & Cooking
• Plant and tree identification and practical uses • Foraging through the seasons • Identifying poisonous plants and berries
• Rabbit - skinning, preparation and boiling a stew • Rainbow trout - gutting, preparation and steaming • Open fire cooking
• Survival fishing techniques - making hooks from natural resources for fishing • Animal tracks and signs
• Animal snares and traps - natural cordage and making snares from natural resources for trapping

 

The Knife
• Selection of equipment • Safe and responsible use • Maintenance

 

Navigation
• Map orientation, understanding norths, symbols and grid references • How to take and use a compass bearing
• Pacings, time and distance
• Records of intentions • Navigation by the night sky and the sun

Campcraft
• Site selection and organisation • Health and Hygiene • Leave no trace •
Environmental impact awareness and access

Outdoor Safety
Understanding the environment • Emergency equipment selection and use • Modern survival shelter systems and methods of use
• Emergency contacts, procedures and signals • Hot food in an emergency without flame or stove

• Expedition style base camp and natural shelters in the forest • All meals are provided • The course is suitable for Vegetarians

Cost

• £175 per person • We do accept deposit payments (£50) - Balance due 8 weeks before course start date
